Large language models (LLMs) based on Transformer architecture have demonstrated exceptional performance across a variety of benchmarks. However, the staggering parameter sizes, reaching into the billions and even trillions, incur significant operational costs. For instance, GPT-3, with its 175 billion parameters, occupies approximately 350GB of storage when using FP16 format, exceeding the memory capacity of even the latest NVIDIA B200 GPUs, which have only 192GB of memory. This presents a substantial challenge for deploying these models in resource-constrained environments such as IoT devices, embedded robots, and offline mobile applications.

To address this challenge, researchers have been exploring model compression techniques to “slim down” large models without significantly sacrificing performance.
